painting nails and washing feet

Last night I painted my toenails.  SAY WHAT, did I really do that {smile}!  Sometimes, God shows up in the little things…

We were heading over to a dear friends home for some quality visiting, and of course I wanted to look “presentable”.   I just wanted to “take five”, to get a little “dolled up” just for the fun of it!  I hadn’t painted myself up since last November, when my husband and I escaped away to our favorite spot for His birthday {Camden Maine}.  In fact, before I began painting, I had to remove the small remnants of pretty red polish that were still making themselves at home on my two big toes, after so many months.  I simply scratched them off with my finger nail, easy come easy go!

{Drum roll please}, I took 10 entire minutes to clean my feet, apply fresh polish to those tired Mommy feet, and the whole time I was “thinking”!  Once in a while, or more times than not, going out gives me the extra, gentle nudge to remember how to take care of myself!  I began caring, and serving myself… lovingly.

It was last night that I realized, painting nails is not much different than washing feet.

Do we remember that washing feet was one of the final examples of Jesus’ love for His disciples {John 13}.  Now, why on earth would I ever think that Jesus wouldn’t want to wash my feet?

As I prepared my toes, I thought to myself,  “Jesus wants to serve me right now”.  He wants to wash my feet!  Does that make you uncomfortable, like it did me?  As I did my best to continue serving myself, in the middle of imperfect painting, He whispered the thought that really, He’s serving me, and letting me know how much He loves me perfectly!

All I have to do is say, “yes”, I accept your washing, your service, your blessing.  Jesus, I accept you, and invite you to paint all parts of me… even my dirty, sometimes smelly feet!

Even in the freshening up during those coveted moments of quiet mommy rest, I realized how blessed I am.  I have nails to paint, the health to do it, 3 children to kiss goodbye, free babysitting {thanks Nana & Papa}, and friends to welcome us home to theirs.

Jesus just washed my feet and somehow I knew it.

Not everything in life has to be “deep”, as long as everything in life means something.

Today’s Prayer ~
Lord, help me rest in the simple, and learn through the depths, to just say “yes”.   I believe, and I accept your love for me.   Help us all find moments of rest to accept your service again.  Amen.

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”
And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”
Psalm 27:8 NLT

  3. Hi Amy,

Happy Thursday! :) What a cheerful photo of your toes in the water too. Just this evening, my daughter, little son, and I gave each other foot massages on the deck, trying to serve each other and using some of my new sugar scrub. It was relaxing, humbling and we laughed a lot.

Oh, how my heart says, “No, Lord, I can’t ask You to wash my feet!” And yet, you are so right…He already is serving me. Every. Single. Day. of. My. Life.

    Humbling for sure.

Beautiful post. I love how He speaks tenderly to us in the simplest of moments.

      Evenin’ Kimberly,
I love how you said that! We literally have a fresh start each day, as we say no to ourselves, and yes to His love! It is such a humbling thought for me as well. Now, for the grace to sit, and invite Him to continue to teach me that. :)
